A software engineering team built to design, ship and operate real systems

BackSpaceStudios is a Zambian scientific and technology company. The core team is led by four computer scientists, supported by legal and communications expertise. We design, build, deploy and operate complex multi-role systems — from national platforms to cloud infrastructure and data pipelines. We operate what we build, and we document everything we hand over.

Based in Kitwe, Zambia  ·  operating across Zambia & SADC

01

What we build

Four connected engineering capabilities. Each one is delivered by the same senior team, using the same production-grade practices.

Platforms

Multi-role platform engineering

Registries, portals and workflow systems for organisations with complex permissions, multiple user roles, audit requirements and long-running operational processes.

Applications

Full-stack web & mobile

React and React Native front-ends paired with Java/Spring Boot or PHP back-ends, sharing types and code across web and mobile. APIs, integrations and offline-first design.

Infrastructure

Cloud & DevOps engineering

AWS infrastructure, Terraform, containerisation, automated CI/CD, monitoring and backups. We design and operate the environments our platforms run in.

Data

Data systems & integration

Data pipelines, warehousing, dashboards and system integration. We connect operational data from multiple systems into a coherent, queryable whole.

03

How we engineer

Capability is not just what we build. It is the discipline behind it — the practices that make a system secure, maintainable and operational after launch, not just on demo day.

01

Automated CI/CD

Every commit runs through automated testing and deploys via GitHub Actions. No manual deployments, no "it works on my machine".

02

Infrastructure as code

Our cloud environments are defined in Terraform. Reproducible, reviewable and versioned — not clicked together in a console.

03

Automated testing

Unit, integration and end-to-end tests run before every release. We catch regressions before your users do.

04

Security by default

Role-based access control, audit logging, CSRF protection, keyless CI deployments and secrets management are part of the base build, not add-ons.

05

Monitoring & backups

Health checks, log aggregation, cost alerts and automated database backups. We operate what we build, and we know when something goes wrong.

06

Ownership & handover

Full documentation, runbooks and admin training at project close. You own the code, the data, the domain and the cloud accounts.

04

The team

A senior team based in Kitwe. Four computer scientists lead engineering, supported by legal and communications expertise. The people you meet on the first call are the same people who architect, build and support your software.

05

For investors & partners

We are building a Zambian technology company with real products, a senior engineering team and a clear expansion path. This is where we are, and what we're looking for.

What we've proven

Execution capability

  • Production systems in sport, education and agriculture
  • Engineering discipline: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, automated testing, security by default
  • Operational capability: we run what we build on AWS Cape Town
  • Client delivery: a completed website and digital presence for FOSHE
What we're building

Expansion roadmap

  • Extending Flame, Student Portal and UniAgric
  • Mining technology services for the Copperbelt
  • Data intelligence as a foundation for future capabilities
  • Regional expansion into SADC
What we're seeking

Partnerships and capital

  • Equity investment
  • Grants and development funding
  • Pilot customers and early partners
  • Distribution partnerships across the region

06

Where we're heading

Our platforms already generate and process structured data at scale. We are exploring AI, IoT and advanced data intelligence as a strategic direction — areas we believe will matter most in mining, agriculture and education across Africa. We are not selling these as services today. We will share more as our work matures.
